Short Protocol for IVF Treatment
The short protocol for IVF begins on the first day of the menstrual cycle with the administration of GnRH (Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone), which stimulates the release of FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone). This treatment continues for several days until the end of the cycle. Afterward, FSH and HMG (Human Menopausal Gonadotropin) are administered starting on the second day of the cycle to support ovulation. The specific number of days and follow-up schedule are determined by the treating physician.
Other Variants of Short Protocols
An alternative short protocol involves administering GnRHa (Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Agonist) for three days, after which the treatment is stopped while continuing FSH and HMG for the remainder of the treatment cycle.
Although short-term protocols may vary, the key difference lies in the low level of GnRHa and FSH suppression, as dose adjustments are made in the center to suit each patient’s needs. This protocol is particularly recommended for women with poor ovarian reserve.
Pre-IVF Preparation Steps
- Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Couples should refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol as these habits negatively affect sperm quality and overall health.
- Reduce Stress and Get Sufficient Sleep: Both physical and mental relaxation are crucial, as stress can impair fertility. Adequate nighttime sleep significantly improves body function and readiness.
- Start Taking Vitamins (Especially Folic Acid): Couples preparing for IVF, whether using a short or long protocol, should start folic acid supplementation in advance to enhance reproductive health.
- Protein-Rich Diet: A high-protein diet can help support ovarian function and improve treatment outcomes.
- Regular Exercise: Engaging in consistent physical activity before the protocol helps build physical and mental strength.
- Complete Necessary Tests: Before beginning the protocol, all laboratory and diagnostic tests should be completed, including:
- Comprehensive blood work
- General hormone tests
- Hepatitis screenings
Hormonal tests are repeated periodically during treatment as needed.
Hormonal Suppression and Medication
Whether following a short or long protocol, the treatment typically spans 20–21 days of the menstrual cycle, during which hormonal suppression and essential medications are administered to optimize the outcome.
