Laparoscopic Removal of Ectopic Pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus. These cases are often referred to as tubal pregnancies since most occur in the fallopian tubes. If the egg gets stuck in the tube due to an issue with the egg or the tube itself, it cannot continue its journey to the uterus. Since an ectopic pregnancy cannot progress normally, it must be terminated. Approximately 90% of women with an ectopic pregnancy require surgery.

Preoperative Tests for Ectopic Pregnancy Removal

Before undergoing surgery, several tests are conducted, including:

  • Ultrasound (to locate the pregnancy)
  • Blood tests (to check for anemia)
  • Blood type testing (in case a blood transfusion is needed)

Laparoscopic Procedure for Ectopic Pregnancy Removal

Ectopic pregnancy can be treated using laparoscopic surgery (minimally invasive surgery). The procedure involves:

  1. Making a small incision in the abdomen or near the navel.
  2. Inserting a thin tube equipped with a camera and light (laparoscope) to visualize the reproductive organs.
  3. Removing the ectopic pregnancy and either repairing or removing the affected fallopian tube.
  4. The choice between repairing or removing the tube depends on the amount of bleeding, damage, and whether the tube has ruptured.
